Brazil Hypermarcas To Buy Diaper Co Mabesa For $198 Million

SAO PAULO (Dow Jones)–Brazilian consumer conglomerate Hypermarcas SA (HYPE3.BR) said late Friday it signed an agreement to acquire local diaper company Mabesa do Brasil Ltda. for at around 350 million Brazilian reals ($198 million).

“Mabesa’s acquisition is consistent with the company’s strategy of acquiring trademarks and assets in the Beauty and Personal Care sector, thus strengthening its portfolio of disposable products,” Hypermarcas said.

“Through this transaction, which comes to complement Pom Pom, Sapeka and York acquisitions, Hypermarcas consolidates its position as the largest national company in the disposable products sector, leader in both baby and geriatric diapers segments,” it added.

Mabesa–which manufacture and trade disposable and absorbent diapers, feminine pads and wet wipes–posted a net revenue of BRL267 million in 2009.

Hypermarcas has assets in the medicine sector as well as in the beauty and personal-care, home-care and food segments.
